An Australian cricket cap awarded to Ted a~Beckett in 1928-29. The cap is in excellent condition. Made by Harding's Mercery 248 George St./ No. 1A Hunter St. It bears the hand written name "E.L.a`BECKETT".
The cap is rare example of a 1920s Baggy Green cap. The Kangaroo and Emu and badge are made from bullion (wired embroidery). This was the case prior to the second world war. The Blue of the southern cross and the rays of the sun are made from cotton. The backing colour for the four quadrants are silk. As per caps prior to the 1930s it carries no date and also has in the red ribbon "Advance Australia" Dates under that cap appeared on the 1930 tour and then from 1932-33 (until 1972) This was also the second last time "Advance Australia" would appear on the cap. From 1931-32 onwards it was simply 'Australia'.
Thus a very rare cap, especially in this condition. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from the a`Beckett family. Ted an all rounder from Victoria played 4 tests, the first in 1928-29. He toured with the 1930 Ashes side playing in two tests in the UK and played his final test in 1931-32. He played District Cricket with Melbourne University Cc and St. Kilda CC.
