DESCRIPTION

A rare 1927/28 NSW Waratah jersey. The famous 'running rugby' side that toured the UK, France and Canada. As rugby was not being played in Queensland the 1920s and the team included Rhodes scholas and Queenslander Tom Lawton. The side's internationals were recognised by the ARU as Tests in 1986.

Sydney James Malcolm was born in Merewether (Newcastle) in 1903. He is regarded as one of greatest halves ever for Australia. He was picked for the Waratahs from Cooks Hill Surf Club Rugby (Newcastle) The club merged to form Merewether Carlton in 1930. Syd later played for YMCA, Glebe-Balmain and Manly. Malcolm played 44 games for NSW (6 of which are now regarded as Test matches) He played a further 12 for Australia and of the 18 Tests he was captain in 6. The sky blue jersey was made "Geo. Lewin & Co. Ltd" of "8 Crooked Lane, London Bridge EC" It bears the number 13 on a white patch on the back. A dislocated shoulder against Oxford University sidelined him for the Irish and Welsh Tests however he returned to earn a Test debut against Scotland in Edinburgh and finished the tour with three Test caps from just 11 appearances. From that Scottish international Malcolm played in 18 of Australia’s next 23 Tests.

Malcolm like all tour members wore a tour number for all games test and tour. Following his injury his suspicion of the # 13 numbered jersey grew. To defeat the hoodoo, he added a '1/2' to the number. (See attached report from NSW Rugby News 1932. Story also recounted Daily Telegraph 27th May 1935 p.6) His handwritten '1/2' is visible on the white patch! The jersey has been in a frame for number of years and has faded on the chest (with the faded arm folded across it) That said, it is in very good condition. Geo Lewin also supplied the Australian Cricket Test side its caps in 1912. A rare jersey - just one other is in public museum at Rugby Australia.
