Lyn Davis - All Black # 745 - had the misfortune of being a contemporary of two other halfbacks who excelled in this position for the All Blacks in exactly the same era as Otago's Chris Laidlaw and Northland’s Sid Going.
For nearly a decade - Davis was selected as reserve halfback to Laidlaw and Going. That was about to change in 1976 when he was selected as first starter at halfback for the All Blacks against Ireland at Athletic Park - after just recovered from a calf injury. This recurred near halftime and he was replaced by his old rival Sid Going.
As a halfback Davis lacked the running flair of Going, but he had many of the attributes of Laidlaw. He was a swift passer, an accurate kicker, a firm driver of his forwards and as much loved by his outbacks, especially five eights. Davis worked on his family-owned market garden near Christchurch - growing tomatoes. Thus he had the nickname “Scaley”.
