Book Review; “A Rugby Memoir” by Peter Johnson A little-known, self-published (2000) autobiography by former NSW & Australian hooker Peter Johnson. This book is a great personal insight into a previously unrecorded era of Australian Rugby from 1959-67 that included many highs after several years of ups and downs in Australia’s fortunes. From scarcely-remembered primary school beginnings with Waverley Public School, through Sydney Boys High, club football with Randwick and onward to NSW and Australian selection, Johnson recounts his career in a witty, whimsical manner. His recollections of players, both teammates and opposition, as well as particular matches and tours are told in an engaging manner.

If you are looking for scandal and juicy stories off the field, this book is probably not for you. Instead, his memory to detail regarding what occurred on the field and his reactions to certain situations is quite astonishing. There are many humorous anecdotes throughout the story, but I’m sure names have been withheld on occasions to protect the guilty. The golden years of Wallaby rugby in the 1960’s are detailed thoroughly and makes for an absorbing read. Although Johnson played on for 5 more years, he ends the book after the 1966/67 tour to the UK, France & Canada, reasoning that the years covered were his greatest memories and an end of an era that saw half of that touring team never don the gold jersey again. Highly recommended to all rugby followers, a great yarn.
