The cap bears the Kangaroo (used on NSW and Australian caps and jerseys) as well as the wire embroidery (known as bullion embroidery)“N.S.W.R.F.L”. “1914” is embroidered on the front to the peak with “1915” added to the side.
We could therefore assume it was presented to a NSW debutant in 1914. In 1914 NSW played the touring Lions twice (once in Melbourne) but did not play against Queensland. Matches with the northern state recommenced in 1915.
We believe this cap was awarded to Bill Kelly who first played for NSW in 1914. Already a representative rugby union player in N.Z. Kelly who transferred to rugby league, played for the Kiwi’s in 1912 & 1913 against N.S.W.
In 1914 Kelly went on to play for Balmain, represented for N.S.W. and also played in the first Test that year. He was injured serving during WW1 and later was known as the ‘Prince of Coaches’. Since 1997, The Anzac Test is now contested for the Bill Kelly Cup.
Assessment: The blue NSW Cap is in very good condition. The cap has been professionally conserved by the International Conservation Services and is mounted and shadow box framed.
