DESCRIPTION
A blue British Lions jersey from their 1930 tour of New Zealand and Australia. The jersey is # 28 - the tour number of captain the forward FD (Doug) Prentice. The number is white with no patch. The badge on the front is not the badge with the 4 nations emblems, but rather the older 3 Lions badge. Three is no manufactured label, but rather some very detailed washing instructions. Englishman Doug Prentice a number 8, played 3 tests fro England 1928 and 2 Tests on tour with the Lions. He served in both wars, was an English selector 1932-1947, manager of the British team to South America 1936 and secretary of the RFU 1947 to his death in 1962. The 1930 British Lions played 21 matches in New Zealand (winning 15 though losing the test series 1 -2) before they arrived in Australia. In New Zealand the All Blacks played in white due to the dark blue jersey that the British wore. In Australia the side played 7 matches losing 2, one of these being the sole Test match which was played at the SCG (Aust 6 - Britain 5). The jersey comes from the Trevor Allan collection. Jeff Noseda the Tour secretary of the 1947-48 Wallabies presented this jersey to Trevor. Jeff was NSWRU Secretary for 25 years until his resignation in 1946 (this was in the time that there was no Australian Rugby Union) It appears there was some controversy over the dark jerseyed Lions playing Australia wearing their NEW dark green jumpers. The jersey is in excellent condition - very bright , no fading, holes or tears. Small amount of stitching on the badge is loose.
