DESCRIPTION

A rare first hand account of Bradman's 309 in a day in 1930.

The vendor's mother, wrote the postcard to her brother. She also used Adelaide family connections (Vicor Richardson) to have the card signed by Bradman.

The vendor sates...The Post Card in question was written by my mother, then Phyllis King, aged 20, at the Leeds Cricket Ground Headingley in July, 1930. She had witnessed Don Bradman in his epic innings, making a century in each of the day’s three sessions against England on Friday, 11th July. The card was sent to her brother Allen King in Adelaide and remained in his papers until he died on HMAS Sydney in 1942. Later it came into my possession after my mother’s death.

The wording on the card is as follows:

“Don’s a marvel. Thought you’d like this to keep, Allen. Dear Allen Thought you would like this photo of Don Bradman. This was taken the day he broke the world’s record score at Leeds (Headingley Grounds) of 334. Gee it was great as you see. I got him to write his signature on it. My word you’d love to have seen him bat – it was a great sight. We saw every ball that was bowled. Phyllis”

My mother kept a diary of her overseas visit in 1930 and the entry for 11th July was as follows:

“Leeds Test match – marvellous weather but a bit chilly. Jackson out for a duck, but Bradman knocked up 100 before lunch. Beautiful cricket – all thrilled to bits when he passed the world’s record (287). Made 309 the first day in 5 and 1/4 hours. The English team could do nothing with him”.

Bradman mania created that day still didn't stop a small typo on the card...Australian Test team - D. J (sic) (Don) Bradman. For sale is Bradman signed postcard with hand written message (not diary entry is not included)
