IMAGE THUMBNAILS
DESCRIPTION

This is from the personal collection of former Wallaby Prof. Max Howell. The All Black jersey was framed by Max 8 years ago and at that time he had a plaque affixed that stated, "JB Smith 1947"

Jersey is now unfarmed. It is a #6 (oversize white cloth number sewn directly onto the jersey in patchwork style. There is no maker's label on the jersey's collar, The silver fern has been embroidered on a cloth patch and this has been sewn on to the jersey (as was the case in that era)

Max played the All Blacks in 1946 in Dundein, where the home side wore normal 1-15 numbering commencing with # 1 at Fullback. JB Smith wore # 3. The All Blacks toured Australia in 1947 and as was the convention they wore the same tour number in both provincial and test matches. JB Smith was #5 throughout the series (irrespective of which position he played) # 6 for this tour was Cantabrian Morrie Goddard. Based on this evidence we can only assume it is Morrie (also a centre) with whom Max swapped.

As the jersey was framed there is some fading as well as small staple holes at top of shoulder, under the arms and at the hem 9all photographed. Some framer's adhesive tape, now removed was used on side of body and on sleeve. It is slightly visible. Overall for a 68 year old jersey is it very good.

Comes with a letter of authenticity from Max's wife and co-author Dr Lingyu Xie.
