DESCRIPTION

An Australian Rugby League Kangaroo jersey from the 1948-49 tour. The jersey bears the number 1 on the back. Clive Churchill's tour number, worn in test and club games on this trip was #1. The other Fullback picked V. Bulgin was # 2 and the three Hookers for instance were and wore # 26, 27 and 28.

The jersey shows some fading and evidence of wear. The Australian coat of arms is quite worn and faded but intact and complete. The jumper shows some signs of wear as there are a few small holes and loose seems (under the arms) The jumper bears the Made by David Jones Sydney, NSW, maker's label. The jumper also carries the cloth yellow number one on the back. This has been sewn over a black cloth to give it an 'shadow' effect. This is an unusual design for Kangaroo jerseys but consistent with the other 1948-49 Kangaroo jerseys in public collections. A number of Clive's jerseys are in the family collection however it should be noted that player's received three (3) jumpers each for this tour.

The jumper is from the collection of Albert E Johnson who played left wing for Warrington (1939-1951), England and Great Britain. Warrington defeated the Kangaroos 16-7 on the tour. Only a handful of Churchill jerseys have come on the market. One from the famous 1950 series sold for $17,000. Others have been valued for much higher amounts. This was the first of five overseas trip and he played in all 5 tests on the tour. Churchill was described a The little Master, and is one of the original Invincibles and often rated as the greatest player of all time.
