A red and white hooped Japanese jersey, made from heavy wool. In excellent condition. There is no maker's label but it does bear the number 10 in black letters on a white patch.
The jersey is from the collection of the late Max Howell. Max who played Test rugby for Australia, lived and worked in Canada for numerous years and was heavily invloved in their rugby programmes. Max framed the jumpers in recent years and had this labeled as 'B.C. versus Japan 1960's". BC being British Collumbia. Japanese rugby has a long tradition of matches against Canada and Canadian teams.
These are regarded as "Tests" by Japan. In 1963 Japan played the Bristh Collumbia Bears at Vanvouver, where Japan won 33-6. 12 Japanese players made their Test debut in the match. I have a team list but not a programme listing players with numbers. The previous Japanese Tests had been playd somes 4 years before, against British Columbia and also Oxford & cambridge Unis in Japan. The next time BC played japan was in Tokyo on 22 march 1970 so possibly from this game.
