Duncan McGregor – All Blacks Collection

1905/06 signed ball from the tour.

Duncan McGregor, All Black # 101, played 31 All Blacks Matches 1903-1906.

He also then toured Australia and the United Kingdom with the New Zealand Northern Union All Blacks professional side in 1907-08.

As an All Black he toured Australia in 1903 and played in New Zealand’s first test match in Sydney. In 1904 he played in the and his second test match against the British and Irish Lions.

He toured Australia in 1905 and then the United Kingdom, France and North America with the 1905-06 ‘Originals’

He played a total of four test matches scoring 6 tries, which included 4 in a single game against England – a record which stood for several decades. His final test was the controversial loss to Wales in 1905.

Four Test and four of the most significant – The first ever test match for New Zealand – the first test against a British Lions side, a record 4 tries scored at Twickenham in this third and his final test the ‘Match of the century’ - the disputed defeat by Wales in 1905.

From his 31 All Blacks games he scored 34 tries and kicked 2 conversions, an amazing strike rate.

While on the professional New Zealand team’s UK tour he played eight tour matches becoming a very early dual international.

He did not to return to New Zealand following the final tour, instead staying behind in Great Britain to open a sports store in Gloucestershire and sign with the Merthyr Tydfil club. In 1912 he suffered an ankle injury and retired from the game, then opting to return to New Zealand.

According to author Christopher Tobin’s in his book on Duncan McGregor “Rugby Rebel: The All Black accused of being a traitor”

“Before leaving, McGregor gifted three of his most precious possessions to the landlord of the Ran Hotem in Gloucester – his original All Blacks jersey, a rugby ball signed by every member of the 1905 All Blacks and his test cap first awarded after the test against Great Britain at Athletic park in 1904”

On offer; team signed ball from 1905-06 All Blacks Originals Tour

The leather ball (currently deflated) ball is embossed with “ZUG” and “WATERPROOF”.  ZUG was a patented type of leather manufacture at the time.

The ball contains several signatures. These include;

D Gallagher, W. Johnstone, WJ. Wallace, F. Newton, EE Booth, J. Hunter and G. Tyler.

The collection changed hand then lay dormant for decades.

Long time owner of the collection Alan Townsend, a Gloucester rugby legend and long term administrator, was interviewed by the club as a part of their oral history;

Of Allan Townsend - In just five seasons Allan made 196 appearances for Gloucester Rugby Club. He was club captain in the 1961-62 season. His final appearance was on 24 October 1964 against Coventry.

Allan also played a total of 18 games for Gloucestershire; his final one being in 1964 against Lancashire in a Championship semi-final.

Allan served on the Gloucester committee from 1983-96.  He was also a member of the Gloucestershire committee for 18 years, and member of the RFU committee from 1991-97.  Allan Townsend was President of Gloucester Rugby from 2008 to 2013.

During Allan ownership the three items featured in an episode of the acclaimed and long running Antiques Roadshow. (Programme #103 April 2002) - All Blacks team rugby shirt appraised by Tim Wonnacott as "the best-preserved 1905 Originals jersey in existence".  Interestingly it refers to "McGregor's signature on the inside of the leather neck".

Following the appearance on the roadshow the Rugby Museum at Twickenham viewed the collection and it went on display there for a short period.

In 2006 the collection was on loan to New Zealand Rugby and was the centre piece of a Centenary Exhibition welcomed home at the NZ Parliament.

They have since been on display in the offices of New Zealand Rugby.

In 2011 New Zealand rugby held an open day and proudly announced in a stuff article;

As well as trophies held by New Zealand teams now, the public can also see rare 1905 Originals items on loan to the NZRU, which were welcomed back to New Zealand at a reception in Parliament in 2006.

The items include a 1905 Originals All Blacks jersey and cap worn by Duncan McGregor, and a ball signed by the whole 1905-06 All Blacks team.

McGregor's jersey has an "M" sewn on the hem and an embroidered silver fern. Despite its age, it is still a deep black, only slightly faded, with a tear on one side.

The ultimate First XV Jersey Collection is the brainchild of former board member Chris Liddell, who along with Rob Morrison has been working discreetly for several years around the world to locate and secure jerseys from historic All Blacks matches and tours dating back to the first Test match played in New Zealand in 1904.

As mentioned above - The jersey bears the ‘M’ mark. The significance explained in this article

Alan passed away in 2022 and the collection is now offered by family members.
