DESCRIPTION

1937 NSW v South Africa jersey. Arguably the greatest match in NSW rugby history.

The 1937 Springboks toured Australia (11 games ) and New Zealand (17 games) they lost just two games the match v NSW and the 1st test to New Zealand. Thus won 26 (of 28) including 4 of the 5 tests and the squad has been called "The best rugby team to leave New Zealand'. The NSW win 17-6 (5 tries to 1) was extraordinary as the Springboks defeated Australia 9-5 and 26-17. Furthermore, the state game, played at the SCG was on a flooded field in pouring rain. NSW coach Johnny Wallace instructed the team instead to play dry weather football and throw the ball around, hence 5 tries - and all to outside backs.

The Waratah jersey came from the famous Van Rensburg collection and was auction by Legends Auction online in September 2005. It was LAO13.0-003.

The jersey is # 9 and Rugby Australia Archives advised that number was worn by 'Mac' Ramsay a back rower in this game. He worn # 9 in the tests also. 'Mac' played 4 tests for Australia 1936-1938 and was a member of the aborted 1939/40 Wallabies. He played 13 matches for NSW 1935-1939. He served in WW2 and died as a POW.
