Australian "Baggy Green"
An Australian cricket cap – AKA a baggy green cap.
Presented to Norm O’Neill for the 1961 Ashes Tour to the UK.
The cap bears the Farmer’s Sydney, logo ads has a type-written label,
“2/61 N. O’Neill”
The cap bears the cricket coat of Arms and the date 1961 embroidered below that.
A type written label was normal in this period of the late 1950 and early 1960s.
The cap shows some discolouration to the coat of arms. The inside contains the plastic disc, also common at the time.
There are signs of sweat to the inside, some discolouration and one small hole.
On the 1961 Ashes Tour, Norm played in all 5 tests, scoring 324 at an average of 40.50 with a high score of 117. The series was drawn 2 all.
The cap is being offered by the grandson of an Australian Customs agent who was given the cap, in person, by Norm O’Neill upon re-entering the country.
