This jersey style was worn by Eastern Suburbs for just there years from 1944 to 1946.
The plain design was used due to wartime shortages. This jersey was made by “MURDOCHS SYDNEY” and is sky blue with a red and then white V. Assessment: The jersey shows signs of some discolouration and foxing otherwise in very good condition. A patch was worn on the back with number at some stage.
We are unsure which year form this period that this jersey was worn…it would appear that in 1945 the colours of the V were reversed on the jumpers, as seen in the Grand Final winning team photograph above. That said it may be an Eastern Suburbs jersey given the ad hoc nature of supplies at the time it may be from any of the three years.
This sky blue & V design has been used in recent years by The Sydney Roosters to commemorate their now traditional ANZAC day clash with St George. A replica of the wartime jersey was worn by the Sydney Roosters in 2008 and 2009.
